BNP Paribas New Zealand – How a small team is helping to create an integrated Asia Pacific client offering

BNP Paribas has been in New Zealand since 2002 and during this time has built an enviable reputation as a true global custodian with multi‐local and multi‐asset capabilities. BNP Paribas offers custody and fund administration services for locally‐domiciled funds in New Zealand and provides our clients with access to all major financial markets.

With local expertise in 36 markets, BNP Paribas provides end‐to‐end services for our institutional clients’ on both the buy‐side and sell‐side of the market.

Our unique New Zealand capabilities have enabled us to win multiple new mandates this year, and make a significant contribution to the growth of our Asia Pacific business.

In 2019, we have won three of the country’s largest and most significant mandates to come to market.

As an example of our capabilities and innovative approach, BNP Paribas New Zealand was awarded by The Asset Magazine – the award for Best Custody Mandate 2019 alongside our client Kiwi Wealth.

Increasing our competitive advantage further, in April this year we became the first global custodian to be accredited as a depository participant of the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX). This accreditation continues our ability to offer differentiated and innovative services to clients. This accreditation opens access to a new segment of the New Zealand market to BNP Paribas and enables us to offer market participants an agnostic approach for depository and settlement channels in New Zealand. The NZX depository access aligns with our Augmented Custody programme which aims to increase process automation and achieve faster corporate actions and income announcements.

Having recently won a series of the largest local mandates in New Zealand, BNP Paribas in New Zealand is going from strength to strength. We have in-depth, local understanding of the local market, including regulatory challenges. When we need to, we leverage the skills of our regional experts from Sydney, Singapore or Hong Kong. This demonstrates our globally stated ambition: “To be recognised as the premier longterm asset servicing partner of choice for leading financial institutions in a fast changing world”.
