John Belsham is an international winemaker, businessman and critic who loves to share his knowledge and passion about the wine industry. His wine career started in the 70’s in the Médoc a region of France well known as a wine growing region.
Today, John has over 35 years of wine industry experienced that has shaped and guided some of the most successful wine companies today. Fluent in French he continues to share his ideas, philosophy with business partners and friends worldwide. His France connection has always continued.
Wine is a part of his daily life and lifestyle.
In 1990, Belsham founded Malborough Oak Imports to supply wine barrels to New Zealand wineries. Today, the company is the leading supplier of premium, forest origin barrels. With a desire to focus on crafting single vineyard wines with a dedicated focus to Pinot Noir, he founded Foxes Island in 1992. Today the winery produces Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc from the Belsham Awatere Estate: a seven terraced estate with some of the country’s oldest soils.
Doing business on a niche market Foxes Island has a strong international respect and recognition from its client. Providing the same “premium wine experience” around the world is their motto. Kelly Brown and John Belsham foster their experience and philosophy personally and professionally every day.

- - A founding member of the New Zealand Screw Cap Initiative in 2001 and he continues as chair of the NZSCI.
- - A board member of the Pinot Noir NZ conference in 2007 & 2010 and a distinguished speaker in 2004, 2007 and 2010.
- - A featured speaker at the 2012 International Pinot Noir Symposium in Germany.
