On the 21stof July 1883, Jules Verne, Louis Pasteur and other illustrious visionaries from all walks of life, designed the structure for the Alliance Française as it is: a network of local associations created upon the initiative of the civil society in order to favour the exchanges of cultural and linguistic values.
With nearly 1,000 centres worldwide today, the Alliance Française contributes to the gathering of thousands of women and men who hold those values and wish to offera cultural alternative to globalization.
At the Alliance française, we offer much more than language courses. People who come to our classes are eager to share and thrive in our cultural differences. The Alliances Françaises do not only promote the French language and the cultures of French-speaking countries, they are fuelled by a passion for mutual enrichment.
In New Zealand, the Alliance française has been active for 118 years. There are now 10 centres which all offer social as well as cultural activities with 7 of them (in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Nelson, Palmerston North and Wellington) also providing French language classes. For more information on your local Alliance, check the website of our national network: www.alliancefr.org.nz
The Alliance Française maintains strong ties and implements quality cooperation with cultural and educational local institutions. They work closely with the Cultural Service of the French Embassy to schedule linguistic and artistic programming.
